Do You Have a Focus Word of the Year? (Does God Have a Word for You?)

As we navigate the first few weeks of a new year, it’s the perfect opportunity to push reset and take time to consider what the next 12 months will hold and how we want to show up over the next 365 days.

One beautiful practice that has captured the hearts of women everywhere is selecting a “Word of the Year” theme. Regardless of your age, this meaningful tradition offers an inviting path to finding focus, clarity, and intention for the months ahead.

The last several years, I have chosen a word to focus on for the year. As I wrote this post, and considered some of the words I have carried over certain years it was interesting to say the least.

Looking back I recalled those which had been words I have focused in the recent past. It was amazing to remember again how they became significant steps in my personal, vocational and spiritual growth.

Trust; the year I was downsized at work.

Dream; the year of covid, when so many dreams felt empty.

Believe; the year I was diagnosed with cancer.

Be; the little word from last year that, I am still processing. In so many ways it was an incredible gift and a reminder over the year to be present, be aware, be willing, be ready, be with, be listening and be still to name just a few.

The words we chose often pop up in everyday life, in the most unexpected ways.

We hear it. We notice it. We look for it. We see it.

Let’s explore how choosing a word of the year can inspire you.

Embrace Your Journey: A Year Filled with Infinite Possibility

Life is an incredible journey filled with so many days yet to unfold. When we choose a word of the year, we invite a sense of solid direction into our life. It doesn’t matter if we are 45 or 75; this practice encourages us to reflect on our own unique path. It helps us navigate our days filled with all manner of twists and turns with grace and determination.

Cultivate Authenticity: Embrace the Beauty of You

As women, we carry many roles and responsibilities, sometimes losing sight of ourselves along the way. Embracing a word of the year allow us to prioritize ourselves and create a focus and filter for the way we plan our calendar and fill our days.

It acts as a gentle reminder to honor our passions, dreams, and desires—allowing our authentic selves to come through. We make choices on what matters most to us and are more able to say no to those things which pull us off course.

Embrace Growth: Look for What is Next

The beauty of life lies in its ever-changing nature, and God has given you the ability to experience growth at any age and stage. Choosing a word of the year celebrates your unique life journey so far and ignites sparks of growth yet to come. It allows you to step beyond your comfort zone and be brave!
